If you could be mentored by anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
President Higgins – I have huge admiration for him. He truly believes in equality.
Why did you become a volunteer with Le Chéile?
I believe in second chances. I believe that people are inherently good, and even when they don’t do good things, that doesn’t make them bad people. When I saw that Le Chéile was recruiting, I knew they were a really good match for me.
What has been your highlight of volunteering?
The people! The mentees, the mentors, the support staff, and even down to the amazing people involved in events training, I’m always happy to spend time in their company
What do you think the parents and young people you work with get from mentoring?
Unconditional time and space to be themselves without judgement or pressure. They get someone to be there for them, consistently.
What are the key skills or personal attributes needed to be a good mentor?
Empathy, time, and a willingness to learn about and accept that people’s lives, cultures and families come in many forms!
