Jake’s Story

Jake has been a volunteer with Le Cheile Mentoring for 4 years. He is based in Cork and has recently started a new career adventure. Jake is inspired by all-Ireland winning, former Kilkenny hurling manager Brian Cody. 

 

What three words would you use to describe yourself? 

I would describe myself as energetic, focused, determined.

Why did you apply to volunteer with Le Cheile?

I got in touch with Le Cheile because my friend’s Dad has been a long serving mentor. I signed up to be a mentor in Cork and here I am, 4 years later!

What has been your volunteering highlight and how has volunteering impacted you? 

Being able to see you mentee develop and move in a positive direction. There’s a really wholesome feeling when you pass the two year milestone as a volunteer. Volunteering is something everyone should find some time for. There are no negatives. It has mutual benefits for you, society, and the people you work with.

What would you say to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer mentor? 

I would say most certainly go for it! The benefit of helping young people and parents is so rewarding

What does ‘Being a Mentor’ mean to you? 

Being a mentor brings a sense of responsibility and purpose. This responsibility helps me to steer, support and engage in a way I hadn’t really thought of before. Building and maintaining connection is very important for mentoring.

What are the key skills or personal attributes needed to be a good mentor?

Being resilient and consistent are really important to be a good mentor.
