Volunteer Application Form

Restrictions on volunteering:
Le Chéile recognises that people from the helping professions and the criminal justice sector may wish to volunteer as a Mentor with us and we acknowledge this with good intent. However in order to avoid any perception of a conflict of interest, there are restrictions on volunteering for some professions. This applies to serving probation staff, court personnel, Gardai and prison officers.

Please tick to indicate you are not in one of these restricted groups.
Criminal Records:
We welcome applications from people with a wide range of life experiences. In line with keeping people safe and the nature of the work we do, there are a small number of offences that will exclude someone from volunteering with us and some that require a 5 year waiting period from the date of conviction. All others not listed below are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Le Cheile is required to ask about criminal records and this will happen when a volunteer applicant is invited to induction training. Vetting will take place during induction training.

Offences excluding volunteering:
  • Offences under the Children Act 2001
  • Offences which involve a child as a participant or victim
  • The offence relates to the ill treatment of vulnerable persons
  • The offence relates to the ownership, production, possession, or distribution of child pornography.
  • The offence relates to a crime of domestic violence or sexual offence.
Offences that require a 5 year wait period:
  • Where the offence relates to a crime against a person e.g. assault, harassment, or related to racism.
  • Where a firearm/ significant weapon was used in an offence.
  • Offences involving terrorism.
  • Offences involving serious criminal damage such as arson.
  • Offences of burglary, theft, fraud.
  • Where an offence occurred while in prison.
  • Where the offence relates to possession of controlled drugs for sale or supply or trafficking.
  • Drunk driving or other serious driving related convictions
  • A multiplicity of convictions over years (not just relating to one time period/event), even where they are minor/summary offences.
