Ignite Potential, Change Lives
Applications now closed!
Le Chéile Mentoring provides a one-to-one mentoring service for young people who are involved in the Justice System and their parents. Mentoring is delivered by a team of passionate, trained volunteers who are valued and supported by the organisation and who make a positive change in the lives of those who engage with us. We work in partnership with the Probation Service, An Garda Síochána, Oberstown Children Detention Campus, Crosscare and other agencies within the youth justice arena.
Who we’re looking for?
We are looking to recruit volunteer male and female youth mentors over the age of 21. We are also looking for volunteer male and female parent mentors over the age of 25. We are currently recruiting in across Cork, Limerick, Clare, Waterford, South Tipperary and North Dublin.
In our Limerick and Clare service, we are also looking for victims of crime to volunteer in Restorative Justice – a way to ‘make good’ the harm caused by crime.
Our mentors come from all communities and backgrounds and while no experience is necessary, a positive, flexible, reliable approach with good communication and interpersonal skills will be an advantage. People with experience of the justice system are welcome to apply. Our parents and young people come from all walks of life, so we are looking for people that can make a connection and build positive relationships.
What’s involved?
The overall goal of mentoring is to build a trusting, enabling and supportive relationship with a young person or parent to help them develop their skills and relationships, and improve their self-confidence, emotional wellbeing and to do activities they are interested in or try new things out. Mentors from diverse backgrounds and interests meet with their young person or parent once a week for between one and three hours.
Mentoring takes place in the local community and typically include doing activities together like trying a new sport, taking up a hobby or just meeting for a bite to eat and a chat. Volunteering is flexible so you can meet during the day, evenings or weekends, whatever suits you and your mentee best. Le Chéile will cover all costs so the giving of your time, support and commitment will not leave you out of pocket.
What will you get out of it?
As a mentor, you have an opportunity to encourage positive change in the life of a young person or a parent through your kindness and support. Additionally, you can also expect the following:
- Full induction training
- Support of a trained Mentoring Co-ordinator
- Regular group sessions with other Mentors
- Optional ongoing training to learn new skills
- Reimbursement for expenses
- To meet new people and make new friends
- To gain experience that will support your personal and professional development
Recruitment Process. All candidates will undergo interview, mentor induction training, reference checks, Garda Vetting and/or Overseas vetting.
